Designated as a refuge in 1992, the refuge includes several parcels of land along the Tualatin River. Public access is only allowed in one section near Sherwood, Oregon.
One visit in late January included two great blue herons, a white egret, coots and ducks, grazing nutria, red-tailed hawks and their smaller cousins, as well as the resident pair of bald eagles.
